[Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam November 11th, 2019] Taking place from 06 to 08 December, 2019, the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon, being organized by the Department of Tourism, the Department of Culture & Sport of Ho Chi Minh City, and the Athletic Federation of Ho Chi Minh City, continues to expand its significance inside Vietnam by increasing its number of annual participants for 2019. With nearly 13,000 runners, the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon will remain the largest competitive running event in Vietnam. And due to such a large number of participants, the government has graciously supported the organizers in gaining additional road closures along the marathon route, allowing this year’s runners to have a better marathon experience as they navigate the course. Sunrise Events Vietnam is honored to continue to deepen its relationship alongside the government, with respect to the four departments of the Promotion Center of Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Sport & Culture of Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City, and the Ho Chi Minh City Athletic Federation.

Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of Department of Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City shares: “The potential for growth in international recognition becomes more expansive with each year. With the first year having 5,000 participants… and then this year expanding past its original projection from 10,000 to 13,000, increasing 44.79% from 2018.  It is rewarding for the Department of Tourism to observe the international impact Ho Chi Minh City is having on Southeast Asia and the World. The Department of Tourism will continue to be enthusiastic in its support of international events, especially as they bring awareness and funds to charities for the people. It was therefore a highly considerate gesture when 16 hotels, ranging from 3 to 5 stars, extended the offer of discounted rooms to participants for this 2019 Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon.” The event also supports and encourages people to protect the environment with the message,A Green Road, A Green City.

Mr. Mai Ba Hung. Vice Director of the Department of Culture and Sports Ho Chi Minh City shares: “Such an event gives rise to the true nature and identity of a city. Through the medium of sports, people can come together and push themselves in a healthy and productive manner. With the continuation of international events in the city of Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnamese people can share their culture on an international platform. That is a significant thing in a world where modernization is overtaking everything. We from the Department of Culture and Sports are glad to support organizations and events that help to preserve Vietnamese culture.”

The Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon is one of the 469 member races with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races [AIMS]. The benefit of the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon being a part of AIMS has been the opportunity to exchange information between directors to help with the collective improvement of marathon races around the world. This marathon season has great news for all event runners who are 40 years of age and older, as they can earn world ranking points at the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon as part of the second edition of the Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Rankings qualifying series[2]. Participants in a qualifying race earn points according to their age, time, and gender, aligned with the specific age group categories for men and women. Each country with a ranking athlete will be represented at the world championships which are to take place in the Spring of 2021. This is a significant opportunity for Vietnamese runners to record one of the two marathons they need in order to give themselves a chance to compete on a world stage for international competitive running.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Hinh, Vice President cum General Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Athletic Federation: “This event has developed a movement in the sport community of Vietnam. Athletes all across the country, from Hanoi to Da Nang, from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City, are being given the opportunity to experience athletics on an international level. Indeed, a precedent has been set… Runners from all over the world, professional and amateur alike, are hearing about this event. And as time goes on, more runners from the national and international running sport community are likely to venture to our great city to be a part of this movement. That is why such events are an asset to the widespread community of Vietnam.”

An increasing amount of this year’s participants were registered as corporate teams and over 70 corporate teams will take part in the Corporate Challenge. The growth of the Corporate Challenge is in response to growing awareness of how participation in running events as a team can build camaraderie and heighten collaboration in the working environment. These teams will work together for the collective goal of a healthier life and the opportunity to win complimentary entries into next year’s event as well as memorialization on the Corporate Challenge Trophy. The Organizers from Sunrise Events Vietnam also hosted workshops for corporate teams, upon request, that covered marathon preparation and best practices as well as development of healthier lifestyle habits.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Chief Marketing Officer of Techcombank: “The true spirit of Techcombank, in association with international events such as these, is to help provide for the Vietnamese people an event that is about the celebration of their city. To be native to this country is to have a rich and unique identity. And something as special and interesting as that should be shared with the world. The international platform that this event creates allows not only for the Vietnamese people to come together, but to experience the joy of interacting with other cultures who honor us by traveling to our country of Vietnam and racing in the Ho Chi Minh City Marathon.”

“Only with the support we have received from the Government, Community and Run Clubs, Corporate Teams, and all the Race Participants could we create such an event,” shared Onslo Carrington, General Manager of Sunrise Events Vietnam.Changing the route for this year’s marathon to accommodate such a large number of race participants to go through 6 districts and pass by even more iconic landmarks was such a great sign of progress in these several years of planning events throughout Vietnam. Already, we have met several energetic individuals in the workshops for corporate teams who have requested them, and that makes us feel the momentum of the running culture here in Vietnam keeps going. The energy you feel in the planning alone is ecstatic, and the promoting of running culture in not just other corporates, but our own workplace as well, feels so genuine. It is truly fulfilling when the thing you work at every day is something you can actually get behind in your life on a daily basis.”

The event begins on Friday, December 6th, 2019, with the “Marathon Village,” which offers fun activities for the entire family with exciting exhibitors, live music performances, clinics, special talks and food and beverage offerings. The marathon (42.2km), half-marathon (21.1km), 10km, 5km and Kids Run, for young athletes aged 5-14, will take place on Saturday December 7th and Sunday December 8th, making for a fantastic weekend of fun, health and fitness. Moreover, participants that complete the race within the stipulated time period, the organizing committee will make a contribution of 10,000 VND – per 1 kilometer finished– made to the designated race charities.

Image of Finisher Medal Design

3rd Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon 2019

The Organizers from Sunrise Events Vietnam have designed a unique medal to commemorate the race for finisher participants that details the iconic marathon course. The medal’s shape resembles the number ‘6’, which represents the six districts which the marathon course passes through. The medal design displays landmark images from the districts. Each landmark image on the medal is taken from an iconic photo of each district and used to provide an artistic impression. All of these districts hold an important significance for the identity of Ho Chi Minh City, such as the preservation of the unique and original neighborhoods in District 5 and district 6, as well as the increasing development that has occurred in the financial center within District 1 which reflects how Ho Chi Minh City is moving forward into the modern era as a dynamic and vibrant city. It is therefore the purpose of the medal for the 2019 Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon to offer an overview of how Ho Chi Minh City appears from an international perspective.
