[HO CHI MINH CITY, June 6th, 2019] Vietnam’s largest competitive international running event is expected to return with over 10,000 athletes, more than double the inaugural edition, for its 3rd edition as a multi-day competition.
The event kicks off on Friday, December 6th, 2019, with a “Marathon Village,” which is open through the weekend. Just as the event aims to ignite healthy habits across all demographics, the Marathon Village will offer fun activities for the entire family with exciting exhibitors, live music performances, clinics, special talks, and food and beverage offerings. The marathon (42.2km), half-marathon (21.1km), 10km, 5km and Kid’s Run, for young athletes aged 5-14, will take place Saturday, December 7th through Sunday, December 8th.
“Once again, Techcombank is proud to be involved in one of the top international sporting events in Vietnam,” said Mr. Nguyen Le Quoc Anh, CEO of Techcombank. “In just a few years, the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon has become a major community event that attracts thousands of runners from around the country and world to test their fitness, engage with the Ho Chi Minh City community, and bring awareness to a number of great causes and “Be Greater Together”. We hope that together with the sport community we could build the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International marathon to a proud iconic city as other marathon in the world”.
The event aims to highlight the rich history and spirit of Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam, while also showcasing the country’s growing focus on health and wellness and attractiveness as a sports tourism destination. Athletes taking part in the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon 2019 are not only embracing a healthy and active lifestyle through this physical challenge, but also creating an impact for those less fortunate. Similar to the 2018 edition, the Organizing Committee will donate 10,000 VND per kilometer to the Poverty and Sports Sponsorship Fund of Ho Chi Minh City and Newborns Vietnam for each athlete that finishes their event before the cut-off time. Last year, over 1.2 billion VND was raised for these charities.
With $30,000USD in overall prize money on offer, including $5,000USD for top male and female open category marathon champion, the level of competition is expected to be high from international and local participants alike. All participants who complete the run within the specified time limit will be awarded an official finisher medal from the Organizing Committee.
This year’s event will also serve as the only qualifying event in Vietnam for the inaugural Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championships in 2021. The fastest overall Vietnamese male and female are guaranteed invitations to this international event to represent Vietnam amongst 150 nations from around the world.
“I’m honored to take part in the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon 2019,” said Ms. Chi Nguyen, a Vietnamese professional runner who used her qualification earned at last year’s event in Ho Chi Minh City to run in the 2019 Boston Marathon. “This race served as a springboard for me to compete at one of the most famous races in the world. I’m excited for all the athletes who are returning or running here for the first time. It will be an event you’ll never forget.”
The Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon 2019, organized by Sunrise Events Vietnam, takes participants through the inspiring setting of Ho Chi Minh City, with a course that places emphasis on both historic and modern landmarks to provide one of the most iconic race settings in Southeast Asia and stunning finish line setting along the waterfront that provides finishers a sweeping view of the Ho Chi Minh City skyline. This event would not be possible without strong support from the Ho Chi Minh Department of Tourism, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sport and Ho Chi Minh City Federation of Athletics along with strategic partner Techcombank and finish line venue sponsor, Empire City.
“The Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon has become an important annual event to showcase our dynamic city,” said Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Department. “Visitors from around the country and throughout the world will have a chance to not only run a marathon but explore one of the most exciting cities in Asia. Each year this race continues to grow in impact and scale for our city. We look forward to welcoming all the athletes to Ho Chi Minh City for the 3rd edition of this exciting event.”
