The unique course which took participants through the heart of downtown past many key historical landmarks and into the new urban area of Thu Thiem does a wonderful job of showcasing our dynamic city and providing runners with a sense of Ho Chi Minh City’s history and its bright future.”
In addition to the marathon distance, a 21km and 10km were on offer which attracted thousands of experienced and first-time runners. Over 83% of registrants across all distances were from Vietnam with the oldest male and female finishers being 78 and 74.
Participants and the general public were also treated to a weekend of exciting activities at the Marathon Village at Empire City. Activities included a 1.5 km Kids Run, a talk by world renowned inspirational speaker and blind adventurer Miles Hilton-Barber, live music and expo activities all designed to inspire individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles and overcome challenges.
Techcombank CEO and marathon finisher, Nguyen Le Quoc Anh shared, “Over 600 Techcombank employees participated in this year’s event and I’m expecting more than 2,000 to join next year. This event inspired members of our management team and staff to get out of their comfort zones and work together to take on this great athletic challenge. We are proud to be a title sponsor of this great community event and look forward to working with the organizers to grow it in the years to come.”
Showcasing the impact an event like this can have on the community, participants who finished within the time limit for each distance, were honored for their efforts with a contribution of 10,000 VND per kilometer completed to the Ho Chi Minh City Fund for the Poor and the Fund for Sport talents of Ho Chi Minh City. In total over VND632.35 million (US$23,420) were donated to these two wonderful charities.
Sunrise Events Vietnam Chairman Mr. Bang Trinh shared after the event, “We are proud to have been a part of organizing this inaugural event with the Ho Chi Minh City Government, our title sponsor Techcombank and the many other sponsors, partners and volunteers. We shared our vision with city officials just over a year ago that ‘Every great city, deserves a great marathon’. From there, we worked hard to promote the theme of this year’s race of ‘One Run, One City’ by helping to bring together the many community stakeholders required to ensure the success of this event. When the final participant crossed the finish line on race day we showed to the world that ‘Vietnam can run!’. It’s been an exciting journey and we look forward to delivering an even bigger and more exciting event next year.
